c.1939 Chein, No.35 Gulliver's Travels Musical Top in Original Box
Scarce "Gulliver's Travels" version of Chein's classic tin litho musical top. Complete with original box. Large tin litho top with painted wooden handle. Features illustrations of six characters from the full length Paramount film animated by Fleischer's Studio. This film, along with a full length animated Cinderella starring Betty Boop was Fleischer's attempt to compete with Disney's Snow White and Pinocchio. Fleischer failed miserably at the box office, but today are regarded as cult classics. As a result very few "Gulliver's" toys were produced. Although I've found Disney versions of this top, it's only the second time I've seen a Gulliver's. (The first time was one week ago when an unboxed example sold through Hake's auction. The condition of the top offered here is much better than Hake's). Chein used their No.35 Musical Top box as a generic package for their Gulliver's top. It's not specific to the movie. It includes four panels showing the spinning toy with children's images illustrated across it. The endflaps were printed with the catalog number, generic product name, and company address.
